                       Tempo vene che sale e chi discende,
                       e tempo da parlare e da tacere,
                       e tempo d’ascoltare a chi imprende,
                       e tempo da minacce non temere;

                       e tempo d’ubbidir chi ti riprende,
                       tempo di molte cose provedere,
                       tempo di vengïare chi t’offende,
                       tempo d’infignere di non vedere.

                       Però lo tegno saggio e canoscente
                       colui che fa sui fatti con ragione
                       e che col tempo si sa comportare,

                       e mettesi in piacere de la gente,

Bald ist es Zeit zu sinken, bald zu steigen,  bald sich zurückzuziehn, bald anzugreifen, bald weich zu werden, bald sich zu versteifen, bald sich zu offenbaren, bald zu schweigen,  bald künftger Dinge sich zu zeigen,  bald sich zu freun am Spiel mit runden Reifen, bald sich zu binden und bald frei zu schweifen, bald kühn zu trotzen, bald sich fromm zu neigen. Nur der ist allen andern überlegen  der in den krausen Schicksalslauf der Welt  sich weise fügt, den Sinn der Zeit zu suchen,  und der, bedroht auf allen seinen Wegen,  sich klüglich so zu allem Volke stellt,  dass niemand es vermag, ihm nachzusuchen.

Time comes for those ascending to descend, For those who talk to lend an ear instead, For those who learn to pause and comprehend; Time comes for scanted duties to be sped, For dire revenge on those who dare offend, For threatening deeds in place of timid dread; Time comes to scorn what others reprehend, Or feign forbearance of what’s seen or said. There comes a time for rising, and for falling, a time to speak, and a time to keep silence, a time to listen and a time to act, a time not to fear threats; a time to obey those who check you, a time to anticipate many things, a time to rise against an injury, a time to seem not to notice it. Still, I reckon him wise and experienced who acts with reasonableness, who knows how to comply with time, to make himself agreeable to people, so that no cause can be found to reprove his actions.
