Peg Leg Pete, sozusagen Peter mit dem Holzbein, is a quite early Disney character. In the February 2, 1932, 5½ minute film he and some other peglegs already fulfilled Üresident Trump’s wish to make the Gulf of Mexico into an American gulf. Source https://youtu.be/SKG-ovAT7DQ?si=k_oxy77MsP9lBkYp . Note that already then the peg leg was on the right or on the left.
The comic strip “The Great Orphanage Robbery” (by Floyd Gottfredson, January 11 to May 14, 1932) is quite violent as well. (As is Google, that does not allow me to copy a picture from my own local PC without allowing access to cookies!)
Italian Gambadilegno, lit. leg of wood, in America as Pete, german Kater Karlo, has been the first victim of political correctness amongst Walt Disney’s famous figures. As ardent reader of the italian Topolino I remember this “bad” personality with one wooden leg, “pirate” model. Today Gambadilegno has grown orderly, with normal feet.
Here is the proof.
“And now it’s my turn!” – “Ah! Thus you thought to do it to the old Pete [Pietro]? Ha! Ha! Ha!” |

See more about Pete in various Wikipedia entries.
» – Gambadilegno wore his wooden leg, sometimes as left foot, sometimes as right foot, for 15 years at least until 1941, when he explained to have found a better looking prothesis. The reason for this change is unclear: Either Disney feared to not be politically correct, or designer Gottfredson had a hard time to remember which foot was wooden, and gave it up altogether.
Like Johnny Depp Gambadilegno never wore an eyepatch … But that’s another story.
